Exploring Midtown Savannah: A Culinary Journey Off the Beaten Path

Nestled in the heart of picturesque South Eastern Georgia, Savannah stands as a culinary haven, boasting a rich tapestry of flavors deeply rooted in Southern tradition. Today, embark with me on an adventure off the usual path of tourists in Savannah, away from River Street. In a city where history whispers through cobblestone streets and Spanish moss-draped oaks, Midtown Savannah emerges as a vibrant hub of culinary innovation. Today I will highlight three establishments, each with its own distinctive charm: Sly's Sliders, Big Bon Bodega, and Green Truck Neighborhood Pub. These lie between Habersham Village and Downtown and, in my opinion, are culinary musts when weaving through these historic streets.

On our culinary tour of Midtown Savannah, Sly's Sliders is our first stop—an unassuming but flavor-filled sanctuary. Sly's, a hidden culinary gem in the middle of the city, masterfully conveys the spirit of Southern comfort in every dish. The smell of sizzling goodness wafts into Sly's as we walk in, preparing me for an experience with sliders unlike any other. Sly's Sliders takes pride in reinventing traditional Southern cuisine, as evidenced by their inventive sliders that pay homage to fried chicken. With every bite, you can expect a perfect balance of soft, pillowy slider bun and delicious, delicate chicken enclosed in a crispy, golden-brown exterior. It's a symphony of flavors and sensations. If this sounds like your jam, then look no further than the “Bullet Club” on their menu. Sly's Sliders, however, offer more than just fried chicken—their smoked pulled pork dish ups the ante on sliders. Imagine succulent, slow-cooked pork shoulder that has been imbued with the subtle smoke of a well-maintained pit. What is the outcome? A slider with a perfect blend of smokiness, sweetness, and savory deliciousness that will have your taste buds dancing, capturing the essence of Southern barbecue. Sly's roadhouse-style brisket sliders are a must-try for people who want big, bold flavors. The carefully crafted brisket sliders highlight the robust tastes of slow-smoked beef, perfectly balanced with a dash of spice, and sandwiched between two slider-sized pieces of sweet rolls. Sly's unique touch elevates this tribute to the Low and Slow cooking tradition of the South. Sliders at Sly's become windows into the diverse range of flavors that characterize the South, and the restaurant is more than just a place to dine. So grab a seat, order three of these delicious sliders, and let Sly's transport you to the savory and soulful side of Midtown's Southern-inspired cuisine. https://slysslidersandfries.com/

Moving along, our next stop is Green Truck Neighborhood Pub located on the northernmost side of Midtown. It's a haven where classic Southern flavors are painstakingly reinterpreted in modern culinary forms. Enter the welcoming atmosphere of this hidden neighborhood gem, where innovation and tradition collide to create dishes that individually tell a tale of the South with a modern, fresh touch. Green Truck's appetizer, "Spiced Georgia Nuts," demonstrates their dedication to preserving the area's historic culinary legacy while adding a contemporary twist. Here, the lowly pecans and walnuts take center stage and undergo a transformation. The Pimento Cheese Sandwich at Green Truck is a menu highlight that perfectly embodies the spirit of Southern comfort. An everlasting staple in Southern kitchens, Green Truck gives this classic a unique twist. Imagine two nicely toasted slices of bread spread with a hefty amount of sharp, creamy pimento cheese. The end product is a sandwich that embraces innovation and embodies the cozy familiarity of the South, which is the hallmark of Green Truck's culinary philosophy. Freshly squeezed Arnold Palmers from Green Truck go perfectly with these delicious sandwiches. At the pub, a refreshing twist is added to this classic Southern beverage, which is a balanced blend of acidic lemonade and sweet tea. The right amount of sweetness and zesty acidity combine to provide a drink that perfectly balances the strong tastes found in each bite. For those who wish to incorporate a hint of Southern decadence into their salads, Green Truck offers Country Ham as a salad garnish. The country ham's rich, smoky flavors enhance the salad experience by offering a flavorful contrast to the crisp greens and bright vegetables. It's a contemporary, health-conscious option that pays homage to the Southern custom of cured meats. In addition to providing meals, Green Truck Neighborhood Pub creates an atmosphere that allows customers to enjoy modern innovation alongside the comforts of Southern classics. https://greentruckpub.com/

Drum roll please…Our last restaurant we will be highlighting is a personal favorite in the totality of Savannah: Big Bon Bodega! As featured on Guy Fieri’s 'Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives', this place brings uniqueness. They specialize in three main things: Coffee, Bagel Sandwiches, and Mac n Cheese Poke bowls. Few foods can compare to the delectable appeal of the Gold Pig Bowl with Mac and Cheese in the world of decadent dining experiences. This mouthwatering invention, a symphony of flavors and textures, elevates comfort cuisine to a whole new level and invites guests to savor a delicious fusion of flavors inspired by the South. Get ready for a savory culinary adventure as we explore the delicious layers of this remarkable dish. The silky, cheesy macaroni base of the Gold Pig Bowl with Mac and Cheese provides the ideal backdrop for the Southern-inspired mélange that comes next. Imagine a bowl that envelops the comfort and fond memories of traditional mac and cheese, creating the ideal environment for a meal that goes beyond the norm. Sleek and fragrant, the Sofrito Roasted Pork is the star of the show, honoring the heritage of slow-roasted cuisine. Sofrito, a flavorful mixture of herbs, spices, and aromatics, infuses the roasted pork, giving each bite more depth and complexity of flavor. That's not where the symphony of flavors ends, though. A delicious crunch and smoky aroma are introduced by the crispy bacon, which combines well with the rich and savory flavors of the Sofrito Roasted Pork. Sausage adds its own unique savory flavor to the mixture, resulting in a potpourri that makes every mouthful a mosaic of savory joy. The fresh green brilliance of the scallions adds a dash of brightness to the dish, as well as a visual and flavor contrast that keeps the palate interested. In addition to adding to the overall design, these green accents offer a cooling contrast to the dish's substantial and filling ingredients. The finishing touch that unifies the whole dish is a liberal drizzle of Carolina Gold BBQ Sauce. This golden elixir gives the ideal blend of sweetness and tanginess and is well-rooted in Southern barbecue heritage. It adds the last touch, balancing the various components and boosting the flavor of the Gold Pig Bowl with Mac & Cheese to a whole new level. https://bigbonfamily.com/
